The altruistic, versatile soul of Angie Stone

Angela Laverne Brown(1961) grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. As a child, she sang gospel at the Baptist church, inspired by her gospel loving father. Stone worked hard to be able to record demos.

At sixteen, Angie B. formed the female hip hop trio The Sequence with Cheryl The Pearl and Blondie. They were signed by Sugar Hill Records. The Sequence scored hits with Funk You Up, Monster Jam and Funky Sound.

During the 90's Angie was a member of the neo soul trio Vertical Hold, who made two albums: A Matter of Time (1993) and Head First (1995).

The talented singer-songwriter dated D'Angelo. Stone was responsible for the backing vocals and a fair amount of the songwriting on his first albums: Brown Sugar (1995) and Voodoo (2000). Unfortunately D'Angelo decided to focus on his super star sex symbol status instead of loving his female muse and altruistic mentor.

In 1996 Stone, Charlie Mole and Gerry DeVeaux formed Devox. The trio recorded one album: Devox Featuring Angie B. Stone.

Angie's vocals on Vertical Hold's popular track Seems You're Much Too Busy led to Angie's solo career.
Her debut solo album Black Diamond(1999, Arista) was followed by Mahogany Soul(2001, J Records). Her chart hitting third album Stone Love(2004) came a year before The Best of Angie Stone.  The Art of Love & War(2007)'s single Baby, which featured Betty Wright, was nominated for best R&B Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards. More recent albums include Unexpected(2010, Stax Records) and Rich Girl( 2012, Saguaro Road Records).

Angie Stone is a versatile polymath, utterly bursting with talent and passion. An activist, a poet, keyboardist, writer, basketball player, record and play producer, theatre and film actress and - last but not least- an amazing soul singer.

SpY doesn’t lower your cholesterol

SpY Banana, New York, 2008, copyright SpY

SpY is an anti-conformist street artist from Madrid whose first graffiti attempts took place in the mid 1980′s.

He soon abandoned graffiti to explore the vast variety of other artistic media. He first spread his name by means of posters, then by altering billboard advertisements.

His street art work is based on the observation of urban components which he replicates or transforms to produce innovative urban art installations that comment on urban life. Readapted everyday objects create a dialogue, ironic interventions encourage reflection.

Whether traffic lights, road signs, phone booths, police cars basketball courts or Braille messages, SpY wants his humorous interventions to cause an interpolation in the apathetic urban setting, to surprise people with something unexpected, to awake their ordinary lives and make them smile.

The essence of street art

The street art movement arose from the graffiti movement, which was a reaction to the injustice poor youth in NY were confronted with.

Imprisoned in their social situations, artists used graffiti as an artistic
protest against the authorities. The expression form, mostly applied in subway stations and public buildings, provided urban frustrations
with a sound board, a highly original way to share personal opinions and inspiring, positive messages about politics and social abuse in a dysfunctional society.

Street art is a revolutionary art form based upon the continual relation with passers-by and the environment. The concept surpasses the narrower meaning of graffiti but it did remain loyal to the playground and the direct interaction with the public.

By means of a self devised , utmost unique language versatile artists communicate activist, critical messages about political and societal themes, materialism, consumerism, violence, immorality or propaganda for a good cause: to influence the collective behavior and stimulate reflection.

The use of catchy, popular images easily attracts passers-by, who connect with the recognizable, to mass culture referring symbols such as comic characters, super heroes or celebrities.

The spray cans made room for an immense variety of expressive forms: from collages, murals, installations, sculptures, video projections, stencils, knitta, photography, poster and sticker art, to virtual kidnappings.

Evolved from a territorial subculture into an innovative, surprising, subversive phenomenon, providing each and every one worldwide with free art, street art performs the essential role art should have in the development of insights and perceptions.

With its diverse references, interactive messages and intrinsic motivation the possibilities remain endless.

Red Bull BC One World Final 2013

The 10 year anniversary of Red Bull BC One was celebrated in Seoul's Jamsil Arena. On the 30th of November the final breaking contenders fought each other in a one-on-one b-boy battle.

To celebrate ten years of world-class b-Boying, the previous eight winners were present.

The world finalists first had to prove themselves in the cyphers and regional finals, held throughout 2013. Judged on their skills, choreography, innovation and character, the six qualifiers competed with previous belt winners such as Omar, Lilou, Neguin, and Mounir.

The new world champion is South Korean Hong 10, who had already won the 2006 world final in Sao Paulo. He amazed the crowd with an incredible display of signature moves, epic stare-downs and powerful freezes.

Banksy Better Out Than In

October was a busy month for Banksy who was touring the streets of New York while mass producing. Each day another outdoor piece was shared on the artist's website.

His Better Out Than In project is illustrated by a quote of Cézanne: "All pictures painted inside, in the studio, will never be as good as those done outside."

The artist used different media such as installations, stencils, videos, sculptures and performances.

He converted a delivery truck into a mobile garden with butterflies, a waterfall and a rainbow. One of the traveling  installations was entitled Sirens of the Lambs and featured a traveling slaughterhouse delivery truck filled with stuffed animals. A real boy was shining the shoes of a fiberglass Ronald McDonald in the South Bronx, a sculpture of a Sphinx was placed in Queens and a video of ants evolving into a vulva was shown in Staten Island.

Banksy set up a stall to sell original artworks for sixty dollars each and put a jpeg on his website which can be used to make one's own Banksy New York residency souvenir T shirt.

He said goodbye to New York with a balloon throw-up on the Long Island Expressway and asked the public to save 5pointz, an outdoor urban art exhibit space in Long Island City.

Truly: at first the project seemed to be a massive media stunt but one might agree that the concept, the creativity and the used techniques show the artistic abilities of this street artist who criticizes consumerism.

Calligraffiti: 1984-2013

 copyright el Seed
Current MOCA curator Jeffrey Deitch, who recently announced his resignation, will open the Calligraffiti: 1984-2013 show at the Leila Heller Gallery in Chelsea. It is rumored that Ann Goldstein, who resigned as director of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, might return to MOCA.

Back in 1984 street art lover Deitch and Middle Eastern art dealer Heller collaborated on the original Calligraffiti exhibition which explored the links between American graffiti, abstract and calligraphic art.

Opening September 5th, the show now features installations and works from Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Shirin Neshat to street artists as eL Seed.

Calligraffiti 1984- 2013 is built on the relationship between graffiti, street art and calligraphy in contemporary art.

This impressive urban collection of wheat-pastes, silk-screens, outdoor murals and installations, canvasses, photographs was not to be witnessed in its original context but the wide array of expressive forms to convey socio cultural messages remains tangible.

The feminine side of Nuria Mora

Nuria's very feminine, poetic work is best witnessed in the street environment it is correlating with.

The Madrid inhabitant, who studied interior design and fine arts, uses brushes and latex paint to create her individual reflections on new ways of seeing our urban environment.

She wants to form a quiet, neutral spot where passers-by can stand still to form their thoughts.

Her Take Over Madrid billboards are composed of natural elements, butterflies and boldly colored geometrical designs. Other recurring elements include lines, patterns, plants and flowers.

The artist often collaborates with Eltono; both are members of the street art collective Equipo Plastico(with Nano4814 and Sixe). Together they have made street sound installations and light graffiti.

Nuria's gallery work differs from the work she places in the landscape. Her internal world is translated in the form of installations, videos, murals, drawings and watercolor.

Her work has been shown in galleries and museums such as Tate Modern and the Miró foundation.

Beejoir does what he likes best

Beejoir, LV child
Beejoir, a British street artist whose pseudonym derives from a nickname, has been living in Thailand for over a decennium, where anti graffiti laws are non existent. This is where he founded the Souled Out Studios print house in 2004.

Although he was thrown out of art class at the age of 14, Beejoir felt the need to express his thoughts and indeed street art was the easiest way to do so. Recurring meaningful themes include politics, world affairs, religion and consumerism. A versatile artist who strongly dislikes the hidden-meaning concept.

His oeuvre includes paintings, prints, sculptures, photos, wheat pastes and stencils. His pieces are marked by rich contrasting colors and juxtaposed imagery.

There's nothing greater than doing what you love every day of your life.

Menno wins Unbreakable World Championship 2013

Menno Van Gorp started dancing at the age of 12 after having seen Run DMC's “It’s Like That” video. Besides break dancing he gives workshops and organizes events.

The energetic Dutch b boy was one of the sixteen selected b boys who battled each other at the Lotto Arena on April 20th.

Thanks to his unique style the Hustle Kids crew member won the Unbreakable World Champion title for the second time in a row.

Menno's a true hip hop culture adept who misses the old school break dancing scene with MC's, scratching DJ's and beat boxers.

The honest work of Mike Schreiber

Self-taught photographer Mike Schreiber's anthropology studies are reflected in his black and white photographs of prisoners, street kids, musicians.

Meeting new people and discovering things is what appeals to Schreiber, who focuses on the interaction with other people and states his humanistic approach is more important than the pictures themselves.

More comfortable outside than in a studio, he shows a preference for immortalizing his subject in a personal and familiar location. The use of his sense of humor brings about a relaxed, less self-conscious atmosphere.

When he was working for a celebrity photo agency, he felt inspired by the photographers' concert pictures. With a fake press pass Schreiber started shooting musicians in an attempt to sell his work to Vibe and Source. Basically he was just doing what he liked best and having fun at free shows. His non posing, natural light portraits soon led to assignments, published work in Esquire Magazine, Rolling Stone, TRACE, New York Magazine, VIBE, XXL, SLAM, SPIN and Arise in addition to solo shows in New York, Berlin, London, Miami and Atlanta.

His portfolio features snapshots of Erkyah Badu, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Mos Def, Diddy, MIA, Nas, Lil Wayne, Blackstar, DMX and many more. In 2010 a photo book entitled True Hip-Hop, composed of pictures, inside stories and technical details, was published.

No nonsense Schreiber makes honesty breathing pictures which stand the test of time.

The Henri Rousseau of this day: Julien Colombier

Colombier's skate ramp @ Galerie Metropolis, Paris, 2012
Parisian autodidact Colombier makes mental sketches for his nature inspired compositions on walls and ceilings.

His sceneries depict imaginary, fairytale like worlds where human figures are non existent. A black background serves as a basis for surprising murals in oil pastels. Stylized trees, woods, clouds, waves, lightning, flowers, geometrical figures and biblical symbols are the subjects of his pieces. These contemporary fresco's render the devastating power of nature by the repetition of patterns.

Deeply inspired by Henri Matisse and filmmakers David Lynch and Tim Burton, he always creates a dreamlike, dark atmosphere. The designer concentrates on conveying a particular sphere instead of telling stories.

Ron English billboards modern culture criticism

Copyright Lazarides Gallery
American artist Ron English studied photography but chose to concentrate on becoming an exquisite painter and an inspiring street artist.

From 1982 to 1984 he was part of an art crew who modified billboards to communicate criticism on politics and consumerism with passers-by. An essential characteristic of his oeuvre remains this culture jamming: the liberation of an advertisement's commercial message by adding his own, often by means of the use of colorful pop culture's iconography. No need to say English feels inspired by Andy Warhol. His subversive POPaganda conveys sociopolitical satirical reflections on modern culture.

Hand painted popular imagery as comic superheroes, Disney characters, animals, cowgirls and skeletons are used to open a humorous dialogue with the public, often leading to media discussions. The pop iconoclast's Abraham Obama pieces during the 2008 presidential campaign had a strong impact on the election.

Like Dan Witz, English is also a master in photorealistic painting. His versions of symbolical artworks as Picasso's Guernica or Degas' the Absinthe Drinkers illustrate his craftsmanship. Street pirate Ron English simply deserves the name he has on the street.

The deejaying of Ali Shaheed Muhammad

Brooklyn MC, DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad (1970)began focusing on turntablism at an early age. He was asked to produce music for Eric Bennet, D’Angelo, KRS-One, Angie Stone and Mos Def and co-formed The Ummah with Q-Tip and Jay Dilla.

From 1990 to 1998 Muhammad recorded five classic hip hop albums with high school friends Q -tip and Phife Dawg. A Tribe Called Quest remains the ultimate musical initiation point for anyone wanting to explore the meaning of genuine hip hop. The combination of their intelligent rhymes, infectious melodies and the use of jazz and funk samples results in an unforgettable, warm sound which is still up to date.

Muhammad, Dawn Robinson and Raphael Saadiq recorded a Lucy Pearl album in 2000.
Muhammad states the formation of The Ummah, ATCQ and Lucy Pearl was only possible because their members were close friends. With music bonding them, their friendship's chemistry constructed a playground in which expressive, sincere and innovative music was created.

In 2004 the time was ripe for Shaheed's debut album Shaheedullah And Stereotypes, followed by Untitled New Studio Album in 2011.

Muhammad is still spinning his records to get people dancing. His London Jazz Cafe gig was a delight thanks to his excellent choice of music. This Native Tongue pioneer keeps it real and his favorites can soon be enjoyed live in Brooklyn and San Francisco .
